Two Cow Garage/Austin Lucas/Jon Snodgrass; August 25, 2009; High Noon Saloon

I wasn’t upset at all that Two Cow Garage wasn’t playing at the house this time through town, but apparently they were. I guess they have a new booking agent who didn’t know that they have a place they like to play in Madison. For this label tour with Jon Snodgrass and Austin Lucas I feel like playing the High Noon Saloon, which is my second favorite venue after all, was a good move. The show was surprisingly well-attended and it exposed them to more people than at the house, people who might just come to the next house show. That may be even more likely after Shane Sweeney gave me such a heartfelt shout-out during the show. “The High Noon has been great to us, but let’s hear it for Kiki’s House of Righteous Music!” Aw, such sweet boys.

They’ve certainly never been shy about showing emotion, from the first time I saw them I had been impressed with their love of music and of each other. Bassist Sweeney and lead singer/guitarist Micah Schnabel are like brothers, it’s hard to imagine one of them without the other. I’ve seen them play what seems like entire sets leaning into each other, eyes closed, blissfully in love with what they are doing. The last time the two of them came through town they were touring with Ghost Shirt, also from Columbus, and they joined forces on several songs. This tour took it even one step further. Lucas and Snodgrass started the night, trading songs and banter like the Smothers Brothers. Without taking a break, eventually all of Two Cow Garage were up on stage, first backing the other two and then eventually playing their own set This different approach was the next logical step from their fantastically entertaining This Is American Music tour, where everyone sat in with everyone.

It worked incredibly well, it was non-stop entertainment. I was completely charmed by Lucas and Snodgrass, and invited them both to come play the house. Even better if they could do it together, because they were a hilarious team, neither of them bothering to be the straight man. Since the last time it had been just Shane and Micah it was great to see the rest of the band, which includes keyboard player Andy Schnell and Cody Smith who has some of the best ridiculous drummer faces I’ve ever seen. Hopefully their high-energy fantastically entertaining set won them a few more fans and maybe a few of them might find their way to the basement next time.
